Kevin Annet, UK speaking tour and The ITCCS

My dear friends, Happy Spring!

May the joys of the season of budding-ness flow freely for you.

This is a time of renewal.

Here's an event I feel happy to support. There will be more like this, I think.

This month February 2011, Kevin Annett, arrives in Europe to speak about his work, and to advocate for those whose voices have need of hearing.

He will be touring, with readings from his new book, screenings, meetings, lectures, radio shows and more, in Britain and in Europe for the next month.

Kevin learned about the Canadian Indian Residential School System whilst he was a start-up Pastor for a small community near Vancouver, Port Alberni.

He learned it from the Survivors themselves, and followed that up with a detailed review of all historical documents on the matter, and found that yes, indeed, their harrowing stories were more than common: ubiquitous.

He started to speak out about the matter, in the spirit of true remorse at what his own culture had done to another, in the spirit of empathy and compassion and found there was little support from his Church. The United Church of Canada... or from The Canadian State.

The Church, as an Institution, was deeply implicated in the materialisation of that hidden history, and the hiding of the history itself today. As was the State. This whole system of residential 'care' for the purposes of 'assimilation' of the Indian' was all legislated for, by statute, and funded by State and day to day operations were handed to Orders of Priests, Clergy and Laity,

He turned his research into a book, which he self published. It was removed from Canadian Libraries, and Colleges and is now available on-line.

This following is a document that is partly foundational, in that it lays out the philosophy, the key thinking, the cold rationalisations, the preposterous assumptions, the abject justifications for these systems of 'assimilation'. This Document originated in the USA, though it forms part of a body of work that was a world-wide process.

"Beginning in 1887, the Federal US government attempted to “Americanize” Native Americans, largely through the education of Native youth. By 1900 tens of thousands of Native Americans were studying at almost 150 boarding schools around the United States."  They were sent there under duress.

Kevin continued to work as a Pastor, and to share what he knew, to build awareness, to remove the veil, expose the lies. He met and continues to meet resistance, and sometimes extreme hostility, not least from the United Church of Canada.

For being truthful and honest.

He made a documentary about the Canadian Indian Residential School System, the reveal and expose, the stories of survivors, the documented proof of those stories.....

"documentary reveals Canada's darkest secret - the deliberate extermination of indigenous (Native American) peoples and the theft of their land under the guise of religion.

This never before told history as seen through the eyes of this former minister (Kevin Annett) who blew the whistle on his own church, after he learned of thousands of murders in its Indian Residential Schools..."

***Best International documentary - 2006 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival

***Winner: Best Director for and International Documentary - 2006 New York International Film Festival.

Kevin's work is part of a worldwide net-work of Survivors and their Advocates, who are a diverse population, spanning Nation States, creeds, cultures, all with a common story, and a common wisdom, the wisdom of experience, which by being heard, informs and heals.

It matters not which Institutions or which people are those who act in such a clearly mediated and abusive manner, what matters is that where ever it has occurred, it must be addressed, and where it is still occurring, it must end - and it cannot be said to have ended until full restorative justice, with all that that naturally entails, is actively and materially seen to be done.

I hope you have time to explore this matter, as a friend to all people .....

May the spring be auspicious, and may a new flowering of honesty and empathy prevail amidst the noise.

In June, 2010, the The International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS) was established. Drawing on the work of advocates and Survivors from Canada, the USA, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Australia it will start the process of addressing these matters as a world-wide unified campaign.

The International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State - http://itccs.org/about/

It's 5 basic principles are:

1. Full reparations for survivors,

2. Full disclosure of the crimes,

3. Repatriation of the dead,

4. Criminal prosecution of those responsible,

5. Preventative measures to ensure that the crimes against children end.

And it's coming to London, this September, 2011.

Andrew Brown's Blog in The Guardian - Facing the truth.

"A leader who wished to end the crisis would sack Cardinal Bernard Law "
Andrew Browns Blog
THE GUARDIAN - March 17 2010 - St. Patricks Day (irony of ironies)

One ought to read this 'opinion' piece very carefully - it is a protective of The Vatican, , it is a clever piece of propaganda, and all the more nasty for that.

"What has driven a great deal of the outrage is the perception that the church placed itself above the secular law. Well it does.AS A GLOBAL INSTITUTION IT MUST. Otherwise it has no more moral worth than Google or News International, or any other multinational which will do business wherever it is profitable. And – especially under the Polish pope John Paul II who fought so hard against communism – the church's moral worth was validated by its utter refusal to bend to the standards of the society around it."

The author Andrew Brown, also implies that the 'scandals emerged' during the 70s and 80s and are over - he ignores the fact that the Residential Schools System worldwide (both Church and State) operates still, has operated for over 100 years, and that in that time, many millions of children have been profoundly harmed, by a culture of abuse thathas been described as endemic.

The Vatican leadership has long been aware of pedophile rings operating within the Church - the recent Ryan Report (2009) and more recently the Murphy Report in Ireland merely serves as one reminder of this.

The same pattern is repeated across the world. The Last Indian Residential School in Canada was closed in 1996. These were run by Catholic and Protestant Churches, in conjunction with the State.

http://www.hiddenfromhistory.org - Hidden From History : The Canadian Holocaust

The Canadian Social Services have taken over the role of 'assimilation' - Aboriginal Children are 50 times more likely to be fostered than white european children in Canada, and that figure has risen as the Residential Schools were shut down.

Until Our Hearts are on The Ground -
Aboriginal Mothering, Oppression, Resistance and Rebirth
Edited by D. Memee Lavell-Harvard and Jeannette Corbiere Lavell

White fosterers are paid three times the rate that Aboriginal mothers are paid in State support.

This pattern is seen in all countries where Church and State operated Residential School Systems.

Assimilitation by other means. Social services as a tool of social engineering and 'resource exploitation'. The reason for the forced assimilation is that the lands from which these Aboriginal peoples emerge are rich in 'explotable resources' deemed neccessary for the Economy.

Uranium, Coal, Oil, Timber, Gold. To access the lands the Aboriginal peoples have to be co-opted or removed.

In Ireland, Australia, the USA and elsewhere, those populations whose children were formerly sent to Residential Schools are now more likley to experience forced removal of children, who are placed in State 'care' or are fostered. The poor, the distressed, the damaged, the Aboriginal.

Andrew Brown is either unaware of these facts, and their implications, in which case his article is lazy; or he is ignoring the facts, in which case he is being ignorant.

And both of these, given the serious nature of the matter, are harmful.

There are many other like Brown, public apologists for what is criminal activity.

They must  be confronted at every turn.

Empathy demands that one NEVER uses another as a means to an end.

Popes, Power and Native Peoples

Hello my friends....

Been a good few weeks of Festivals, though I did not do as many gigs as I wished I had done.... nonetheless, the shows were great and with such variables, quite interesting.... lots of noodling was the order of the day at Secret Garden...

August will be busy... if not very lucrative..

Here's a heads up on some important stuff ............

Protest The Pope Film Festival, Telling Stories, Survivors Wisdoms

What will it take for those who are insensitive or invulnerable (for whatever reason) to accept that in fact to listen to the wisdom of the stories of lived experience and to understand the meaning of those experiences is a deeper Science than any other, and that those who are vulnerable, sensitive, connected are equally important in terms of information about life, and that non-acceptance creates more distress than anything else.

Anecdotes are information.

A mother’s empathetic bond to her new-born child.

Does it have to be ‘proven’ by Science? Is that what it will take?

In, fact it is now well understood that the empathetic child mother bonding is essential for the healthy development of every child; that this process is soft-wired in, as it is the expected biological route towards maturity and effectively the experiences that that process generates write the neurology and physiology of the child from in utero upon which learning experiences the child's entire psyche will rest. Their potential for violence is originated in dysfunction experienced by the child in utero, during child birth or in post-natal experience... and indeed throughout life, the healthy human is vulnerable.

What does that say about the Society these questions arise from within?

What does it say about us as people born into such a Society?

For too many years the vulnerable have been admonished to ‘be seen and not heard’.

Their voices erased from History, except as a foot note of economics, an anecdote on childhood past, hyped as heroes and hung for treason.

The victims and survivors: Hidden from History. Their abusers: Unrepentant.

Official history serves but one Lord: Apparently so too the Pope.

The Power.

Official History does not serve progressive Society, nor does the Pope serve justice throughout the Community.

How is it that it’s almost never said in public that Society and Pope are linked and entwined, and are both soaked and mired in the blood and lands of many, many, many peoples..

Both Church and State have claimed to be liberating Institutions. Power always claims a beneficent purpose to the exercise of power. And lies; every time.

Unrepentant

You many not know it, but a world wide program of kidnapping the children of First Nation Peoples, carefully dressed as the manifestation of a ‘progressive’ policy move, with the barely hidden intent of breaking the cultural cycles of the First Peoples and replacing those ancient way with a compliant version, a tourist version; and that this was carried out with collaboration from within the First Nation Peoples, driven by bribery and corruption, and was planned, implemented and maintained by both The Church and by the State, for over 100 years.

It’s absolutely well documented, after all it was often administered by vast bureaucracies with efficient record keeping; indeed there is no longer a denial of the practice as policy.

What occurs by way of effective public relations performed by Governments of Colonialised lands and peoples are generally show-pieces,  carefully scripted, paid-for shows and rituals of ‘tolerance’ and ‘forgiveness’, of honouring the wounds of the past using ‘traditional’ rituals - some form of recognition,,,, - and of moving on, of some small compensation, of limiting claims by bureaucratic bungling or simply an avoidance of any responsibility as it really is.

The land ownership/stewardship, ancient ways, acknowledgement of a different way of life as equal if not in many ways healthier all round. These are not mentioned. Criminal Charges against abusers for whom there is sufficient evidence. These do not happen. Nothing happens.

There is no remorse amongst those who rule, and there never has been remorse for their policies and the consequences which many are forced to live, and for the ways in which they use power to such destructive effect.

Which is why the stories must be told, and the community at large must engage in this story telling… if not as a survivor, then as a witness.

And, if need be, a prosecutor.

Protest The Pope

You might not know this but The Pope is to visit the Queen this September. Kevin Annett will be travelling from Canada, where he has for the past 20 years supported the lives and the voices of those who survived the Canadian Indian Residential Schooling System, as will others from around the world who work to give voice to these stories, to confront the Pope, the State and the Church with their dysfunctionally adverse behaviour patterns, past and present.

To present for the perhaps first time in England a world wide exposure of the ways in which children have been abused by Church and State and how that experience is of our common history, a hidden history.

Survivors of State and Church Residential School Systems from many nations will present their evidence, and will quote much more documented evidence of Institutional Abuse of Children as Policy at the State level and within the Churches during a period of 100 years, with some similar Residential Schools with similar issues extant, as Christian and other Missionaries operate in or near Minority Native Peoples…..

And that these practices being common across the globe constitute a crime against humanity of the most serious nature, and require full disclosure, accountability, remorse and reparations as well as a fundamental examination of the nature of hierarchy and its future as a human societal model.

Kevin Annett is, like many others, seeking only resolution, the exercise of justice and finally, the freedom to heal, and to live good lives as natural people.

Kevin Annett will be presenting his documentary “Unrepentant” in London at …… and I highly recommend attending. The film is beautiful, albeit shocking, for there is a start to the healing in the telling of these stories of loss and woundings. There is a strident challenge to Society in the voices that are heard, and one can hear and feel the strength of those people, who intend to see this process through, expressed in the documentary.

One event to recommend is this :

Protest the Pope
The Film SEASON
Conway Hall, Red Lion Square , London WC1R 4RL

Monday 13 September – Thursday 16 September

Kevin Annett is an inspiring speaker, gentle, compassionate, determined, impolite, at times funny and insightful; clear as a bell he explores what the Hidden History means for us all and shows a clear path towards resolution and justice.

Here Kevin speaks outside the Catholic Cathedral in London on the issues outlined above.

The website www.hiddenfromhistory.org is the main website for Kevin’s work.

You will find the full story, plus be able to keep upto date with Kevins work…..

That's all, as that's more than enough to be getting on with!

Seriously, don't take it toooo seriously, just be aware and share the stories... there's a lot of work to be doing.....

A Great Day for the Irish, and Catholic Victims Everywhere: Survivors Rally in Dublin for International Action against the Vatican

A Great Day for the Irish, and Catholic Victims Everywhere: Survivors Rally in Dublin for International Action against the Vatican
by Kevin D. Annett

Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared (Canada)

www.hiddenfromhistory.org

Irish media report:

Dublin, April 15, 2010

"I have a message to the Catholic church today: Get out of my country!"

Kevin Flanagan stood with me and fifty others, including a swarm of all the major media, as he said these words outside the Dail, the Irish parliament, in downtown Dublin today.

Tortured as a child in a Catholic school, Kevin faced the truth unafraid, and shared it with all of us who gathered to confront the state coverup of horrible crimes by the church in institutions across Ireland - and to reveal how these crimes continue.

"My brother Christopher Smith was thrown into a mental institute in Cork by the police for being homeless. They held him there for forty years, and experimented on him with drugs until he died in 2007, a burned out shell of a man. They're still doing that to people, to little kids, in St. Stephen's Hospital in Cork, in Unit 5, right now. Where is the justice?"

So said Mary Smith to our crowd, as national televsion and newspaper media recorded the stories and asked me what I as a Canadian was doing there.

I spoke of how such crimes were international, of children who died in Christian Indian residential schools in Canada, of how there, as in Ireland, the churches responsible have gotten away with murder. And I spoke of how most of the crimes led to Rome, and the Vatican.

At one point, Paddy Doyle, a world-renowned author, pulled his wheelchair next to me, as we unfurled the banner that has flown outside the Vatican, in London, and around the world, declaring "All the Children Need a Proper Burial".

Holding out to me a bundle of children's shoes that were recently hung at another protest by survivors in Ireland, Paddy asked me to carry these shoes as a remembrance of all the children who suffered and died under church control.

Of all the moments I have shared on this long journey, Paddy's offering struck home the hardest. Taking the shoes, I said I would bring them with me wherever I went in the world.

Something seemed to join us all at that moment, and I suddenly knew that, in the midst of the official lies, the corruption, and all the unmarked graves, people like Paddy and Mary and Kevin are part of what keeps the soul of humanity alive.

Even the police there today felt it. Watching from the entrance to the Dail, two young Gardai approached us as the rally ended, and extended their hands to me.

"I want to wish you luck, Reverend" said one of them.

But that wasn't good enough for all of us. Kevin and John and a few of the best stalwarts hurried to the other side of the Dail after the rally, where an "official" meeting between church and government officials was taking place to plan so-called "compensation" to their victims. As the officials entered the side door, Kevin began berating them with Gaelic fury.

"Shame on you!" he yelled.

"Shame on you murderers! We don't want your blood money! We want you in jail!"

I marveled at the moment, as the church flunkies looked terrified and the policemen smiled, and Kevin allowed himself a rare sense of victory. I marveled at how the same spirit that defied the buggest empire in the world, just blocks away during the 1916 rebellion, lived on in the very hearts and lives targeted for death at a tender age.

Later, over tea and beer, Paddy Doyle announced that he planned to arrest the Pope when he comes to England in mid September. And I fully expect that all five foot two inches of him, a "disabled" man in a wheelchair, will do just that.

Today was more than our sixth "Aboriginal Holocaust Remembrance Day", celebrated now in the land of my ancestors. Today was our resurrection day.

To all the children, and to those we may have protected today.

Note: Kevin Annett will be continuing his European speaking and organizing tour in eight German cities between April 19 and 26.

Kevin Annett at the Canadian Embassy in London, April 12th 2010

Kevin Annett at the Canadian Embassy in London, April 12th 2010

A group of good hearted people gathered outside the Canadian Embassy, Trafalgar Square, at around midday to hold a vigil for those Indigenous First Nation children who were forcibly removed from their homes, and placed in Residential Schools for their ‘Education’ by the Nuns, Priests and Officials of the Canadian Anglican Church and The Catholic Church aided by the Government of Canada and it’s officials, between 1889 and 1996, of whom at least 50,000 died in those Schools, and many more who died in the aftermath of the trauma they endured.

These enforced removals were ‘legal’ under The Indian Act. The abuses were not legalised, but went unopposed by the Canadian State and the leadership of the United Church of Canada and The Roman Catholic Church and all others involved.

The False Advert outside the Canadian Embassy pretending to include the wisdom and active participation of the Canadian First Peoples in the Olympics and in Canadian State policy with regards to 'sustainability'.

The agenda was not so much to benefit the children, but to break the living spirit of the communities from which these children came, as a means to appropriating the lands of those communities for the use of the State and Commerce. To extirpate the living wisdom of a people, to destroy their cultural roots and to supplant that with a tourist attraction version of those cultural heritages, that was and remains, in essence, a genocide.

Some background

Kevin Annett, who as a young United Church of Canada Priest (see comments below concerning the correction by 'raspberry'), discovered these crimes in his conversations with First Peoples in his parish in the early 90s, and sought to bring to light the nature, extent and brutality of the Residential School system so as to facilitate a healing and a recognition and a move towards reparation and reconciliation, has written two books on the subject, littered with stories and documented evidence that is incontrovertible.

Kevin Annett paid a heavy price for his heart based work, losing his post as a Priest, his family and enduring intimidation, violence and obstruction as he sought to give voice to the voiceless. Nonetheless Kevin has pursued this path diligently and with profound courage and compassion. Seeking only resolution, avoiding any sense of revenge, he has been ostracised within Canadian Society. So it goes.

He was in London for a few days, as he is engaged in a journey around Europe to work with others who are aware of the ubiquity of this issue, across many nations. He has been to Rome, will visit Ireland and Germany before returning to Canada.

Kevin has also made an award winning documentary ‘Unrepentant’ on the issue in Canada.

The Prelude to the Ceremony

I was one of a group of people who had been following Kevin’s work, and we had gathered together from all parts of London at midday outside the Public Entrance to The Canadian Embassy on Pall Mall, the road leading to the North West of Trafalgar Square. We were attended by a couple of Police Men and some nervous looking Security Guards. As we gathered we discussed how best to proceed with the ceremony.

We were waiting on the arrival or a camera team to record the proceedings when it became clear that some of our number were unaware of the legality of holding such a vigil under wide ranging restrictions imposed by the SOCPA Act 2005. With that in mind we moved into Trafalgar Square to consider our position. Once there we noted 5 Heritage Security personnel were observing our group.

After some deliberation we decided to congregate in Trafalgar Square, at the West Side, in  front of the Canadian Embassy, as that would proved an appropriate back drop to our ceremony.

Within minutes two Heritage Security Guards approached us, making enquiries about our purpose in Trafalgar Square, and started to explain the bye-laws governing Trafalgar Square.

They spoke with Kevin Annett who explained who he was, what he was doing.

One of our group was a well versed Freeman of The Land, and he explained to the Heritage Guard, what we were doing, why we were doing it and our position under Common Law. He explained that we were not subject to Statuary Law, were not consenting to Statuary Law and were seeking to proceed peaceful and with respect in our Ceremony.

The Heritage Guards were at all time polite and reasonable, as were our spokespersons.

Two more Heritage Guards arrived, and some of us spoke to them. We discovered that they were in fact Nepalse Ghurka’s and we had a lovely chat about Joanna Lumley, whom they suggest would make a fine Prime Minister.

While that conversation was happening, the discourse with the first two Heritage Guards had reached an impasse, and two PCSO’s arrived on the scene. Further discussions were held, and eventually a Police Officer arrived. Layers of Authority and Lines of Communication…

Again the Freeman position under common Law was explained in detail, and the young Constable, as he had now been identified, spoke to his supervisors on the radio.

Closing the discussions with Heritage staff and Constables regarding our Ceremony..

The Ceremony

Eventually we were informed that we could indeed proceed with our Ceremony and Vigil, though not within the confines of Trafalgar Square plaza. We were given ‘permission’ to hold our vigil close to the North Western Plinth. This gave us a good view of the Canadian Embassy, and also a certain amount of public exposure, consistent with our desire to inform others as to the facts of the Canadian Residential Schools system, and how that relates to other such Institutional abuses perpetrated in many, many countries around the Earth.

We formed a circle, and unfurled a banner made by the survivors of the Residential Schools in Canada, which had hand prints of the survivors all over it, representing them in spirit, noting their presence in our hearts and minds as we carried out the vigil. A banner was unfurled. Sage was burned, and all were smudged.

Kevin introduced the Ceremony, and drums and guitar music accompanied him.

Kevin spoke of his work, of the need for acknowledgement, accountability and reparation, the need for healing and for an ending to all such abusive practices perpetrated by States and Churches and others against First Nation Peoples and Children.

He invited others to speak in the tradition of the First Nations, offering the Feather he had brought with him, to signify his role as a spokesman for those Peoples…

My words to the Canadian Authorities

For my part, I spoke as I was holding the Feather in my right hand, and burning sage in my left hand, and I called on the spirit of life itself to be with me and turning towards the Canadian Embassy, I then called on all those within that building, all those who work for The Canadian State, for the Churches, Anglican and Catholic to recognise the crimes and abuses that have taken place, to accept responsibility for the past roles, the present cover-ups and to accept that these actions were all and are all acts of choice, and that from all choices consequences must and indeed do flow, and that those who so choose are responsible for their choices, and for those consequences.

I spoke for myself, for my own experience as an abused child held in Irish Boarding Schools and Residential Institutions, and offered my trauma, my pain, my learning’s, my very being to the resolution of all abuse behaviours, and called on Nature, the mother of all life, to help and assist those within the Canadian Embassy to recognise the Mother within their hearts, to open to the empathy that is innate to all life, to find the courage to blow the whistles, to unmask the wrongs done, to account for the wrongs done, to comfort the wounded survivors, to act so that no further abuses be perpetrated against anyone. And I called again that they recognise that these are choices, and that from their choices consequences flow.

I called on them to remember that many times before, great buildings and civilisations that were built upon abuse such as theirs have fallen, and have been overgrown by Mother Nature, and have been metabolised and returned as nutrients for more abundant life, and that this flow is inevitable, that their resistance is futile. Thus consequences flow from choices made.

I reaffirmed that we, the survivors and their advocates mean no harm any child or person.

Conclusion

Others spoke but I did not hear the fullness of their expressions as I was holding the banner. All of this was recorded by camera and will be made available very soon.

We continued the vigil, with music and drumming, singing and dancing and ended in a celebratory tone, noting that notwithstanding the abuse, trauma and woundings, the tears, fears and sadness, we stood as an affirmation of life, as life dancing and singing and growing and nurturing in spite of those who perpetrate horrors upon their brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, uncles and aunts, grand fathers and grand mothers, fathers and mothers.

This is my best recollection of these events, and is of course incomplete. Others will add their experiences in time to tell the whole story.

The Ceremony ended as it began, in circle, as in the old ways of wisdom and empathy.

The weasel words of the Canadian Governments Spun Propaganda, Aboriginal Participation, Sustainable Legacies...... utter lies.
